The Rwandan MPs asked the Minister of Trade and Industry whether all the factories that could pose a security risk to Bugesera Airport have been relocated.

MP Bakundufite Christine, who asked this question, started with the issue of a leather factory that was moved from Bugesera and is to be built elsewhere.

This factory was reportedly relocated because it was found to be a potential breeding ground for birds, which could pose a risk to aircraft that will use the airport.

She said, “Have you checked carefully to see if there are any other factories that could pose a security risk to the airport? There is a meat processing factory in Bugesera.” Wouldn’t that cause birds to attack the airport?”

The minister said that the problem is primarily related to environmentally friendly technology.

He said that the products used in the leather industry are toxic. He said that now to solve this problem, they will establish a so-called tannery park, or a leather industry park.

In Bugesera, they said that they had found a place to set it up, but in terms of environmental protection, they found it impossible.

He said, “After finding Bugesera unpopular, we looked for three other places, now we have arrived in Gicumbi District, and even there we saw a problem. The good thing is that the government is doing the work, and it will find an investor once we have found a suitable place.”
