Whether he likes it or not, Tshisekedi will have to engage in talks with Kabila – Senator Evode Uwizeyimana

The issue of DRC has been discussing for a long time until now. Senator Evode Uwizeyimana stated that one of the major challenges currently facing President Félix Tshisekedi is that he will inevitably find himself in discussions with Joseph Kabila, the former President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He made these remarks during an interview with the National Television on October 18, 2026, which focused on the potential repercussions following the establishment of the *Front pour la Refondation de la Nation* (FRN)—a group led by former DRC President Joseph Kabila.

Senator Evode Uwizeyimana argued that the administration of President Félix Tshisekedi committed a significant political misstep by allowing a death sentence to be handed down against Joseph Kabila—a man whose involvement might actually be required in future negotiations aimed at securing peace for the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He addressed this on October 18, 2026, during an interview with the National Television, which centered on the potential consequences of the formation of the *Front pour la Refondation de la Nation* (FRN), a movement led by former DRC President Joseph Kabila.

Senator Uwizeyimana stated that President Tshisekedi played a role in Kabila’s departure from the country; however, even while in exile, Kabila continued to face pressure—to the point where he chose to engage in both political and military struggle.

In a statement dated October 14, 2026, the coalition known as the FRN announced that it has succeeded the AFC/M23, assuming its responsibilities and existing commitments—including those related to the Doha peace talks.

He remarked, “This political-military group, established on October 12, 2026, has replaced the AFC/M23 coalition—which has long opposed the Kinshasa administration—so how could it not engage in talks with Tshisekedi?”

In his analysis, Senator Uwizeyimana suggests that the future of the DRC cannot be envisioned without Kabila and the group he leads, given their significant influence—especially since President Félix Tshisekedi has agreed to peace talks aimed at restoring security.

Senator Uwizeyimana noted that the formation of the *Front pour la Refondation de la Nation* (FRN) may necessitate a re-evaluation of the Doha peace talks—previously held between the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the AFC/M23—due to the leadership changes within the opposition side. He explained that the ongoing discussions would not immediately shift to the FRN, as the establishment of this coalition does not automatically replace the AFC/M23 in the existing dialogue framework.

He further noted that the fact that Joseph Kabila—whom Tshisekedi had previously excluded from participating in political talks—is now leading the FRN could create a dilemma for President Tshisekedi; it might eventually require him to engage in dialogue with Kabila to find a solution to the security and peace challenges in the DRC.

Political expert Prof. Tombola Gustave, commenting on the FRN led by Joseph Kabila, suggests that Kabila had clearly laid the groundwork beforehand. Had this been illegitimate, the international community would certainly have raised an outcry.

Prof. Tombola points out that before establishing the *Front pour la Refondation de la Nation* (FRN), Kabila consulted with international actors to explain his rationale; otherwise, the international community would have voiced strong opposition.

Prof. Tombola Gustave believes that President Tshisekedi must engage in dialogue with Kabila, who heads this coalition.
