Uganda: The New Ugandan President Museveni sworn in for another five-year term 2026-2031

The swearing-in ceremony took place in the capital Kampala, where Museveni began his seventh term, which ends in May 2031. Museveni has been in power for more than 40 years Yoweri Museveni, 81, has been Uganda’s longest-serving leader, having seized power in 1986 after a bloody coup led by his National Resistance Army (NRA).

He has since led Uganda through successive elections, most recently as the candidate of the National Resistance Movement (NRM).

He won the election with over 70% of the vote

The elections held on January 15, 2026, the Uganda Electoral Commission announced that Museveni had won with 71.6% of the vote of the total Ugandans

Museveni  was facing eight different candidates, namely  Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, who represented the National Unity Platform (NUP), and Nathan Nandala Mafabi of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

Opposition parties again criticized the election

Despite Museveni’s re-election, the opposition continued to criticize the election process, alleging that there were acts of harassment against the opposition and that all candidates were not given equal opportunities.

However, the Ugandan government continued to insist that the election was free and fair.

Questions continue to be raised about his rule over his years in power; Museveni has been praised for his role in improving security and developing infrastructure in Uganda. But some analysts say his long tenure in power continues to raise questions about democracy, political freedoms and the transfer of power in Uganda. In his new term, Museveni is expected to continue his economic development programs, develop the youth and address security challenges in the East African region.

Yoweri Museveni was born in 1944, Mbarara district, in Uganda. He is a representative and former rebel leader who has served as president of Uganda since 1986. Even if he has been praised for modifying political stability and peace and promoting economic growth during his presidency, he has also been criticized for government corruption, an increasing intolerance of dissent, and his refusal to abandon power. He was most recently reelected in the election held on January 15, 2026
