Philippe Mpayimana is an independent candidate for the presidency in the upcoming national election, has stated that sports budgets should be allocated to sectors and that the name ‘Amavubi’—currently used for the national team—should be changed.

He made these remarks this Sunday, following a campaign event in Nyamirama Sector, Kayonza District, in the Eastern Province.

In an interview with the National Television, Mpayimana highlighted sports as an area in need of reform. He noted that there is a significant gap, arguing that sports should be taught from a young age. He further proposed that a budget be allocated to the sectors to support the competitions that take place starting at the cell level—noting that, currently, no such funding exists.

He stated, “There is a gap; while competitions are held at the cell level within our sectors, the winners in cells receives no reward. You cannot expect to produce a Ronaldo or a Mbappé without nurturing a child who has developed, starting right from the cell level.” Independent presidential candidate Philippe Mpayimana, while campaigning at the Nyamirama football field in Kayonza District, stated that a budget should be allocated for sports at sector level. He noted that such a budget is currently non-existent, adding that local sector officials often neither pay attention to nor monitor grassroots-level competitions—activities that are, in fact, of great importance.

Touching upon the national football team, Philippe Mpayimana remarked that, should he address the state of sports, he would propose changing the name “Amavubi” (Wasps), suggesting that the current name might not be “biting” effectively enough.

He stated, “When I address the issue of sports, I will certainly propose that we change the name ‘Amavubi’—since it seems they don’t bite well—and instead adopt a name that would give the country a team with the gravitas of a Lion, an Elephant, or a Leopard.”

Competitions also take place within the school system, starting from the primary level.

To look back a bit, various national-level competitions are organized in Rwanda every year. In addition to those arranged by independent sports federations, there are others that begin at the grassroots level—such as the “Umurenge Kagame Cup”—which starts in the *Utugari* (cells) and progresses through the *Umurenge* (sector), *Akarere* (district), and *Intara* (province) levels, eventually reaching the national stage.

Another competition organized along similar lines is the “Amashuri Kagame Cup” (Schools Kagame Cup). In this category, schools compete starting from the local cell level all the way up to the national level; the top-performing schools at the national level then go on to represent the country in regional school sports competitions.

All of this is complemented by other sports development initiatives established by the nation, including those led by sports federations and various other organizations—such as “Isonga,” among others.

Philippe Mpayimana is an independent candidate and journalist by profession, who lived in Europe before running for President in this election. Mpayimana fled Rwanda during the genocide as Paul Kagame’s RPF advanced on Kigali, an experience he wrote about in his book Réfugiés Rwandais, entre marteau et enclume, and has lived in exile since 1994, mainly in France and Belgium.

He is hopeful of getting votes from the diaspora and believes that the stability of a country depends on the alternation of power. He has pledged to continue to the efforts of the Kagame government, especially in the agricultural sector, and to improve standards of living, including by providing free water for all. He is also planning to tackle population growth by vowing to impose a three-child policy. He stated that families that have more than three children would not get any free social amenities.
